about

‘Long time ago’ is song that combines major elements of African and Western music to create a distinctive unique musical sound.

It’s a dizzying mix of African drums, chants, highlife bass lines, melodic rhythmic guitar, spoken word/rap/ poetry and sultry vocals. It truly is a mesmeric blend.

It tells a poetic story of Africa before colonialisation and exploitation.
Its natural blessings, gifts, strength, prowess and royalty.

Back to the time when Africans were not only associated with poverty, destitution, starvation, world aid, corruption and horrible leaders.

Its weaves together a story of hope. It reminds us to take pride in our heritage and culture.

lyrics

We should not forget
That the Nigeria we see on the map today
As one country, was not always so
It was not a country
But a mere geographical expression

Long time ago
Long time ago
I say long long time ago
Long time ago
As I waka dey waka dey go
Where you dey go?
It was a long long time ago
Long time ago

She yearned for freedom so she could soar
To the highest heights, the lights and more
The promise of what the future had in store
Blessed with jewels beneath its shores
Natural resources beyond compare
Minerals. From the land so rare
But envious eyes couldn't stop but stare
I see evil in the glare
So tell me the price of freedom
Why are we still paying for the sins of Eden
They said all my ancestors are heathen (Chai!)
But yet this world is filled with demons
As I gaze to the stars for a sign
Inner celestial delight ever shine
As I search for the omens deep inside I can see the light

I see the light at the end of the tunnel
We will reap the fruits of our struggle
Yes I know the future is brighter
If we work together
As we work together

Long long time ago, before the invaders came
The cradle of civilization rest in the plains
Of the Savannah spawning millions of miles
Through the Rivers of the Niger, the Congo and the Nile
African royalty reigned supreme
Further and wider than the world had ever seen
But then one day the ships came
And they docked
And time stopped
And time stops
And time stopped

Mr. Joseph Chamberlain
When colonial secretary
Decided that the British Government
Should cancel the Niger Company's charter
And assume direct control
I was appointed to this task
As Governor of Northern Nigeria
On January 1st, 1900

Long time ago
Long time ago
I say long long time ago
Long time ago
As I waka dey waka dey go
Where you dey go?
It was a long long time ago
Long time ago
